Lake Ontario fishing report
Lake Ontario Fishing report for July 2008: The fishing in July has been slow way slower than last year at this time. During June and early July we had very warm water in the Eastern end of lake Ontario and most of the time to find water in the 50s we had to fish as deep as 140 feet down on the downriggers. To compensate for the slow salmon fishing we have concentrated on brown trout fishing and on most days the brown trout fishing was very good but then on some days they chose not to bite as good. But all in all we managed to catch fish mostly browns but once in a while a few salmon and some real big rainbows/ steelhead in the deep water. In fact on Sunday July 20th Don Malick form PA landed a 21 pound summer run steelhead. We were fishing in 365 feet of water out from Oswego Harbor. He caught this beauty on a dipsey diver with a dodger and a glow howie fly. The salmon we have been catching are either small jacks or mature salmon, and the mature salmon we are catching are real nice ones weighing in from the low 20s to the high 20s. Some years we have lots of fish but not real big ones and some years we have real big fish but not lots of them and I have heard of a few 30 pounders caught all ready this year. It is to early too tell what this year will bring because every time I think I have it all figured out I learn how little I really know. Since the middle of July there has been a low pressure system stalled across the border in Canada and this low has produced lots of rain with east and north east winds which pushed the warm water away and allowed the cold water to rise up in the water column. We are experiencing one extreme to the other, warm water way deep and then cold water high in the water column, it has been a difficult year this year. It seems like we get a different wind direction every two days which chances the fishing patterns every two days. But we are getting reports of good catches of salmon from the far west end of the lake and in Canadian waters so it is just a matter of time before those fish decide to head home to the rivers where they were stocked and hopefully that will happen sooner rather than later. The only full days that I have left open are the 5 & 6 of August and September 21 through the 27. Other than these full days I have a few 6 hr. morning and afternoon trips available. If you would like to fish with me aboard the Lucky Dutchman give me a call as soon as you can and I will do my best to find something that will work for you. From now to the end of the season I dont have much time to update this report but I will do my best. Capt. Bill.

I took my Youngest daughter Andrea her son Collin, her daughter Lillie, and Dylan my son's middle boy out for a boat ride on Wednesday afternoon July 2. We left the dock at Wright's landing a little after 12 noon and we ran out to 160 feet of water where we decided we fish a little and it was only a few minutes before we hooked up. Dylan fought the fish with a little help from his aunt and lots of encouragement from his cousin collin. Dylan and Andrea are holding the 21 pound King salmon while Collin helps steady his mother
