Lake Ontario Fishing Spring Near Shore Small Boat Fishery
![]() | ||
When the ice goes out in the spring the waters along the shore line is the first to warm in Lake Ontario and this warm near shore water then attracts the bait fish which in turn then attracts brown trout. Small Boat fishing During the spring this near shore fishery is especially suited to the small boat angler. Who armed with a couple of rods and reels can troll stick baits and spoons for browns along the shore line out to the 20 foot depths. Fishing very early or late in the day or on overcast days will greatly increase the chances for success. The Oswego county proportion of the lake Ontario shore line has a number of good locations in which to start your search for early season trout fishing. To fish in the Salmon River area you can launch at one of the Marinas or you can launch your boat at Pine Grove in the Selkirk Shores State Park. From there you can fish along the shore line North or South. To the North you can fish along the sandy shore of Deer Creek Marsh or go to the South and you can fish along the rock rubble of the state park and the mouth of the Grindstone Creek. Another good launching site for fishing in Mexico Bay is the Mexico Point State Boat Launch and from there you can troll in front of the Little Salmon river. If you troll Northeast from Mexico Point you can work the mouths of Sage and Snake creeks and if you troll to the West you can fish the Butterfly and Catfish Creek Areas. If the weather permits you can troll to the West and fish the High Rocks and Nine Mile Point. There are white buoys around the restricted areas at the Nine Mile Point power plants and you must stay outside of those buoys. If you would like to fish west of Nine Mile Point it would be better to Launch in Oswego at Wrights Landing and from Oswego you have options. You can troll east to Nine Mile Point past Whine Creek, Four Mile Point and Bay Shore or you can stay close to the river and troll in and around the harbor. The option of fishing inside of the harbor is nice when the wind is blowing and it's rough on the lake, you can save your trip by being able to fish in side the Oswego harbor. Early Spring Baits My number one choice for early spring fishing is to troll stick baits one hundred feet back behind the boat. I like to use lures such as #11 rapalas in black/silver, silver/blue, rainbow, Gold/orange with white bellies, Smithwicks in black/silver with white or red bellies, silver /blue, Firetiger, and Thunder Stick Jrs, which are smaller than Rapalas and Smithwicks, use the same color combinations. Spring time is good for someone with a small boat and limited equipment to safely venture out onto Lake Ontario and it is also when they have the best chance of catching fish with their small boat.
