On Lake Ontario the spring fishing gets under way around the middle of April after the ice has left the lake and the air temperatures get a little above freezing.

Quantity Verses Quality

In the spring the fish are not as large as they are in the fall. Our fish have exceptionally good forage so they grow exceptionally fast. But what our spring fish lose in size to the fall fish they more than make up in numbers. We do more limit catches in the spring than we do any other time of the year on Lake Ontario

Close to Shore Fishing

When we start fishing the lake the water tempertures can be anywhere from 34 to 39 degrees. When the water temperatures are that cold we look for the warmest water that we can find. That water is usually found close to shore and close to where a stream or river enters into the lake. The input from the streams and rivers will raise the surface temperature of the water a little above what the surrounding cold lake water is and this pocket of slightly warmer water is where you will find the spring brown trout.

Light Tackle Fishing

Because of the cold very clear water in the spring we are forced to downsize our tackle. In the spring I use custom rods, they are St. Croix fly rod blanks tied into casting rods with small diawa level wind reels. I use 10 pound test main line and 6 or 8 pound test fluorcarbon leaders. I like the slow action of the fly rod blanks because when I have a real big brown trout on the end of the line and he gets close to the boat the excited angler can't break the fish off as easily. I feel that these rods save a lot of big fish for me that would otherwise be lost right behind the boat by the angler pulling to hard. I tell my anglers when the fish is pulling really hard don't you pull so hard. Some people get it and some don't.

Spring Tactics on lake Ontario

We are allowed by law to run two rods per angler and if I have enough people fishing with me I will run between six to twelve rods. In the early spring most of the fish are high in the water colum where the warmest water is so I usually run as many rods as I can on the planner boards with stick baits such as rapalas, smithwicks, and thunder stick jrs. on them. As the water warms the fish will retreat down into the water column so as the surface temperature goes up we fish deeper by using more downriggers and less surface lines on planner boards until sometime in the summer when thermocline sets up then we put the planner boards away untill fall when the water cools off again.

Catch and release

I have come to the conclusion that if you have to put the fish in your hand to remove the hook from it you cannot realease them unharmed. It has been my experience that they will not survie when you have to hold them in your hand to get them unhooked. If I can get the fish out of the net by holding on to the spoon or plug and give the hook a quick twist with my pliers with out putting the fish in my hand they will swim away to fight another day. But when I can't get the hook out without holding them in my hand and I try to release them they go belly up a short distance from the boat. So my policy is, if I can release them properly we do so but if I feel that they are not going to make it then we keep them and when we have a limit of fish we have to quit for the day.

Do it yourself Lake Ontario Fishing

Early spring is the best time for the do it yourself fisherman there is a small boat near shore fishery and there is also a casting from shore program that will work. I provide up to the minute information for the do it yourself fisherman who stays at our place, Feeder Creek lodge.
